Jamie has been a practicing lawyer for 26 years, working both in-house and in private practice.  She was the General Counsel and Corporate Secretary for a major utility until January 2017 when she decided to leave corporate life and start a new firm in Edmonton, Kingsgate Legal.  Jamie has been entrusted with a large number of high-profile, complex cases for a wide variety of clients both in the public and private sectors.  Her current focus is:

Investigations

Jamie has conducted and overseen countless investigations over the years.  Her experience as an investigator and lawyer provides the skills needed to deliver confidential, fair, thorough, legally defensible and timely investigations.  She has a deep commitment to the due process that's needed in all investigations.

The types of investigations she's done include:

  • Sexual harassment and sexual assault
  • Stakeholder and general public complaints

  • Abuse of power
  • Theft and fraud
  • Allegations of policy, legal and regulatory violations
  • Breaches of trust and fiduciary obligations

 

Jamie helps her clients design workplace policies and programs, and counsels executive teams on best practices regarding ethics, codes of conduct and how to shift workplace culture and engagement.  Jamie is a member of the international Association of Workplace Investigators.

On September 5, 2018 Jamie was appointed by The City of Edmonton as its first Integrity Commissioner. In that role, Jamie is responsible for investigating complaints made against the Mayor or Council members under The City of Edmonton's Code of Conduct.

Litigation

In addition to a broad range of corporate law skills, Jamie is an experienced litigation lawyer.  Over the years, she has advised on a myriad of legal cases, including high-profile complex personal injury claims, commercial disputes, employment cases, defamation suits, product liability, insurance claims, professional liability cases, along with many other types of civil litigation and disputes.  She has also represented professionals with respect to their governing regulatory bodies. 

Jamie is a passionate advocate for her clients and provides practical, responsive and strategic advice.  Jamie is an experienced and effective negotiator who helps clients reach resolutions to difficult situations.
